The air was heavy with the festive mood. It was
the eve of Chinese New Year and Sri Cempaka was holding a special
assembly on Friday the 16th. All at school were anticipating the performances
lined up for the occasion. The students were all in red and black
or their most colourful traditional costumes. It didn't matter if
they were of different race or belief, almost everyone felt like putting
on some Chinese clothing!
The assembly started at 9.30 am. Aliff and Janell were our emcees
for the day. We began with the usual singing of the Negaraku and the
school song. After that, the school held a prize-giving ceremony for
the winners of the MSSS swimming competition. Next in line was the
tossing of the Yee Sang ( a colourful Chinese salad) by Datin Frieda
and Co. All I can say is that it was a colourful mess as everybody
tries to toss the Yee Sang higher than the rest.
Finally the performances began! First, we had an I-movie about rekindling
the Chinese New Year spirit. It was a tongue-in-cheek kind of movie
and everyone in the hall was laughing. Absolutely hilarious! Next
we had some dances and singing from both the primary and secondary
students. First time singer, Jason sung his first solo on stage. Freakyish,
winners of last year's Talent Time competition, made reappearance.Their
dancing was a bit random, but upbeat! The main highlight was the Chinese
drummers of Cempaka Beat. The combination of dance and instrumental
skill, was very well choreographed and very, VERY loud. Their performance
received the most applause.
All good things must come to an end. Datin gave a speech and wished
us all Happy Chinese New Year. Our MCs gave us their wishes too and
the assembly came to an end. Everyone made their way out of the hall
and received a free orange courtesy of the prefects as a token to
have a safe and happy Chinese NewYear. Gong Xi Fa Cai everyone! Now
I must go and reap all my Ang Pow. Don't you just love Chinese New
Year. Gong xi, gong xi , gong xi nie... |
