On the 18th of April, Cempaka
Cheras held a special colouring & drawing event in conjunction
with Earth Day. Earth Day is an important day indeed. With today's
pressing issue of global warming and mass pollution, it is vital
that this event helps raise awareness on the environment and also
inspire students to show appreciation to our planet. In the late
morning, the primary and secondary school gathered at the Cempaka
Avenue. Everybody brought their colouring and drawing tools especially
for the event. Unfortunately for all the students, all the colouring
was to be done on the ground! When everybody was settled and got
"comfortable" on the floor, the teachers in charge handed
out the flyers. Each flyer portrayed a simple Earth Day logo. The
rest of the blank white space is up to the student to fill in as
colorful fashion as possible.
There was a buzz of excitement, as everybody got to work. Everything
turned out okay despite the cramped space and sweltering heat. There
were some great pieces among the student's works that I spotted
as I observed and coloured. Some students who were not very skilled
in the art of colouring managed to pull off some decent drawings
though some unfortunately were quite incomprehensible. I spotted
several drawings that practically blew my mind away. Such brilliance!
There were also a handful of simplistic drawings, but they carry
strong and inspiring messages- "The Earth Is Sick and You Are
the Doctor!"
When they started to announce that teachers were allowed to join
in too; things got a little more interesting. Some students urged
their reluctant teachers to colour. Others begged their Art teachers
to make their drawings look less like a kindergarten masterpiece.
It turned out to be a surprisingly fun event. Some students who
managed to finish their drawings traded it to view each other's
work and point out the flaws of their colouring or drawing. Other
students show off their crude drawings and commented on how beautiful
it looked, drawing laughter from the rest of the students. When
time was up, all the students assembled themselves and held up their
work for a photo shot. Then, they handed it in to their teachers
in charge. The flyers will be put up in a complex to be displayed
to the public. What a way to drive home Earth Day's message to everyone!
