Cempaka Schools’ Students Score Wins In Putrajaya Writing and Photo Tilts

Several Cempaka Schools Malaysia students were recently feted at the Yayasan Kepimpinan Perdana (Perdana Leadership Foundation) along with other winners from all over Malaysia on the occasion of Maybank Foundation-Perdana Leadership Foundation Writing & Photo Contest 2015 Prize-Giving last 16 January 2016.

Cempaka Schools student Chin Yoki took the top prize in Fiction Writing (13-17) while student photographers Emir Hidayat Bin Badrul Hisham and Justin Goh Ti Kean were in 5th and 9th places respectively. Cempaka Schools Cheras was also cited for having one of the most number of entries in the Fiction & Non-Fiction categories. Aside from the individual prizes, Cempaka Schools also received books from the sponsors. The theme for the competition is ‘Empowering Youth For A Better ASEAN.’

“I believe the theme of the contest for 2015 is appropriate,…,as the region, with a young population of more than 600 million, is set to become one of the key drivers of world economic growth in this decade. Our hope is that Malaysians will be among the region’s notable leaders,” notes Tan Sri Nik Mohamed Nik Yaacob, Executive Director, Perdana Leadership Foundation. The fourth Prime Minister of Malaysia and Honorary President of Perdana Leadership Foundation Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, wife Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah bt Mohd Ali and daughter Marina were all present as the main guests of honour.

The prize-giving ceremony was even made more meaningful with the inspiring speeches  of Apprentice Asia Season 1 winner Jonathan Allen Yabut from the Philippines who reminded the audience the importance of grit as well as that of Malaysian artist-architect Red Hong Yi’s captivating story of her journey through the art world.  After the refreshments, the National Astronaut Ybhg Datuk Dr. Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor delighted everyone with his stories of his experience in space.

The judges for the Fiction Writing category were Dato’ Professor Ghulam Sarwar Yousof (University of Malaya and The Asian Cultural Heritage Centre), Malaysian writer Tunku Halim, Datin Shajaratuddur Bt Sh Abdul Halim (MPH Group Publishing), and Malaysian writer Chuah Guat Eng. The judges for the Photo-Essay category meanwhile were Documentary photographer and filmmaker Mahen Bala, Che Ahmad Azhar (Multimedia University) and Malaysian photographer Zain Abdullah.

Dr. Mark Carroll, an Associate Dean for the Faculty of Arts of the University of Adelaide and Professor at the Elder Conservatorium of Music conducted a talk entitled ‘The Power of Music’ at the packed North Hall of Cempaka International School Cheras/Cempaka Cheras last 18 January 2016. The talk focused on topics with regards to tradition vs. innovation, how music and musicians developed through the years and how music influences how we think, feel and communicate.

Cempaka Schools Malaysia is the first Malaysian school to incorporate performing arts in the curriculum and has been an active supporter of the craft through its annual Cempaka Schools Box Office Production (CSBOP).

An active classical and pop music performer, his research activities range from music and politics and studies in contemporary popular music. Dr. Carroll publishes regularly in Oxford University Press’s flagship music journal, Music & Letters. Dr. Carroll regaled the audience composed of over 400 secondary school students and teachers with music from different genres and listening devices.

Cheras and Damansara Heights students top World Education Games; Cempaka Schools Malaysia is World Literacy Day 2015 Champions

Cempaka Schools brings pride to Malaysia once again as it continues its triumph at the World Education Games 2015.

Leong Zhi Yen of Cempaka Cheras (Grade K), daughter of Mrs. Seet Wei Ching and Mr. Leong Koon Wah and Sydny Lum Shen Li of Cempaka International School Damansara Heights (Year 6), daughter of Mrs Ting Mee Mee and Mr. Lum Piew, topped their respective categories worldwide (champion of champions) and received their awards in a ceremony in Sydney, Australia last 16 November 2015.

Meanwhile, on behalf of Cempaka Schools Malaysia – Jayden Lum Jun Yi  (2nd place, World Maths Day Competitions and 2nd place, Year 8 champion of champions) of Cempaka International School Damansara Heights received the trophy for topping the World Literacy Day 2015 competition.

The awarding took place in the iconic Sydney Opera House and graced by Norman Gillespie, (Chief Executive Officer, UNICEF Australia), Tim Power (Chief Executive Officer, 3P Learning and World Education Games Founder), Jane Mackarell (Academic Programs Director, Microsoft Australia) and Anna Le Masurier (Head of Macquarie Foundation, Macquarie Group).

Recently, the Interact Clubs of Cempaka International School Cheras/Cempaka Cheras and Cempaka International School Damansara Heights held their respective editions of this year’s International Understanding Day.

The Interact Club of Cempaka International School Cheras/Cempaka Cheras celebrated International Understanding Day with Colours of Life: Latin America as theme with guests from the embassies of Ecuador, Mexico and Argentina.

Her Excellency Lourdes Puma Puma, Ambassador of Ecuador to Malaysia, delivering her speech during the International Understanding Day 2015.

 

The event’s guest speaker was Her Excellency Lourdes Puma Puma, the Ambassador of Ecuador to Malaysia who spoke about Ecuador and the region’s economy and diversity. Also in attendance were the Deputy Head of Mission Mr. Pablo Bonifaz Arboleda (Ecuador); Head of Consular Affairs Juan Ceballos (Embassy of Mexico); Third Secretary Alberto Lasheras (Embassy of Argentina) and Attaché Juan Yanez (Embassy of Ecuador). 

The Rotary International District 3300 was ably represented by IPDG Kirenjit Kaur (Rotary Club Titiwangsa) and PP Christie Daniels (Rotary Club Ampang). Interactors from 7 different schools from around Klang Valley also attended and were entertained by a series of songs, dances, games and a fashion show.

Appetites were satiated by an exciting selection of Mexican food from Gringo’s, a Mexican food truck.
