Cempaka Schools Box Office Production

Cempaka Performing Arts Company (CPAC) came out on top on this year’s Junior Cammies for the Cempaka Schools Box Office Production 2015 Annie, The Musical. CPAC was nominated and won all the four awards:  Best Production Design (Set, Lights, Sound/Music & Costume) and Best Ensemble (second year in a row) while Charmaine Koh Sher Min, who played the lead role, took the Best Principal Role. In the meantime, Scott McQuaid took the award for Best Direction.

Damansara Heights Student Take Top Prize in San Prisco Piano Competition

Rayyan bin Anwar (Year 5) of Cempaka International School Damansara Heights took the First Prize for Ages 10-13 in the San Prisco International Piano Competition – Giuseppe Castaldo Prize recently held in San Prisco, Caserta in Italy.
 
Rayyan scored an amazing 98/100 in his age group. He played 3 pieces: The Sonatine by Friedrich Kuhlau, Mazurka by Chopin and Moody Prawn Blues by Franklyn Gellnick. All winners from all the 5 categories had to perform during an award ceremony held at the Napoli town hall. The winner of each category wins a plaque and 300 Euros.

Dr. Mark Carroll (University of Adelaide) at Cempaka International School Cheras/Cempaka Cheras

Dr. Mark Carroll, an Associate Dean for the Faculty of Arts of the University of Adelaide and Professor at the Elder Conservatorium of Music conducted a talk entitled ‘The Power of Music’ at the packed North Hall of Cempaka International School Cheras/Cempaka Cheras last 18 January 2016. The talk focused on topics with regards to tradition vs. innovation, how music and musicians developed through the years and how music influences how we think, feel and communicate.

Cempaka Schools Malaysia is the first Malaysian school to incorporate performing arts in the curriculum and has been an active supporter of the craft through its annual Cempaka Schools Box Office Production (CSBOP).

An active classical and pop music performer, his research activities range from music and politics and studies in contemporary popular music. Dr. Carroll publishes regularly in Oxford University Press’s flagship music journal, Music & Letters. Dr. Carroll regaled the audience composed of over 400 secondary school students and teachers with music from different genres and listening devices.

Cempaka Cheras student dazzles Hong Kong Dancesport Tilt

Cempaka Cheras student Chong Tze Wey recently dazzled the dance floors of 17th Best of Best Hong Kong Open Dancesport Championship at the Kowloon Bay International Trade & Exhibition Centre last 25th December 2015 where she took three Championship titles in various categories.

Tze Wey was adjudged champion in Latin Solo Freestyle U12(chacha/jive), Latin Solo U14(chacha), and Latin Solo U10 (samba/rumba). Meanwhile, she took 1st runner-up placing for Latin Solo U10 (chacha/jive) and 4th placing for Latin Solo U14 (rumba).

“I just love and enjoy myself very much with the sensation, movements & the feeling of Latin Dancing. I spend a minimum of 10 hours practicing my dances a week. My coach, (Teacher) Kelvin Choo, is a very kind and dedicated teacher who is always there to support me.” This was Tze Wey’s fourth overseas competition and her first time competing in Hong Kong. “I was very happy and overjoyed when the results were announced, with me winning three championship titles, one 1st runner-up title and one 4th runner-up placing for all the 5 events I took part,” Tze Wey gushes.

Guests from the French Embassy, Wisma Putra and the academe enjoy the shows at the Special French Assembly.

Just in time for the arrival of spring in France, Cempaka International Schools Damansara Heights and Cheras campus celebrated French culture and language at the North Hall of Cempaka International School Cheras/Cempaka Cheras campus last 17 June 2015.

Led by YBhg. Dato’ Freida Pilus, Founder and Mentor of Cempaka Schools Malaysia, the schools welcomed Madame Pauline Vey (Linguistic Attaché, Embassy of France), Ms. Morgane Buffin (Cooperation and Cultural Service Officer, Embassy of France), Mr. Muhammad Muhainin (Assistant Secretary of Europe Divisions, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia), and Ms Nadège Martra (cofounder and executive director of SJL French, Kuala Lumpur). Members of the academe were also in attendance, Mrs Mélodie Barthoux (Pedagogical Coordinator for the Alliance Francaise de Kuala Lumpur), Mrs Elizabeth Brio (Lecturer of French Language in the UM University) and Mrs Marini (Malaysian Director of MFUC: Malaysia-France University Centre).

Cempaka Schools gives back: CPAC stages charity show

Last 18 May 2015, the Cempaka Performing Arts Company (CPAC) staged a free and exclusive show of 2015 Cempaka Schools Box Office Production’s  Annie, The Musical for the charity homes in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor at the North Hall, Cempaka International School Cheras.

In attendance were children and the elderly from Persatuan Kanak-kanak Istimewa Kajang (PKIK), Persatuan Kanak-Kanak Istimewa Ampang (PKIA), Child Information, Learning & Development Centre Malaysia (CHILD), Little Sister of the Poor (L.S.P) Old Folks Home, Rumah Kasih, Persatuan Sindrom Down Malaysia, Sunbeams Home, Desa Amal Jireh, Persatuan Kanak-kanak Istimewa Hulu Langat (PKKIHL), Rainbow Home, and Hospis Malaysia.

FOLLOWING THROUGH A STRING OF HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL CEMPAKA SCHOOLS BOX OFFICE PRODUCTIONS, CEMPAKA PERFORMING ARTS COMPANY (CPAC) HAVE CHOSEN TO MOUNT THE BELOVED CLASSIC ANNIE: THE MUSICAL FOR 2015.

Produced by Andrew Chan and directed by Scott McQuaid, Annie will be staged at the North Hall, Cempaka International School, Cheras from 22-24 May 2015 and 29-31 May 2015.

Annie (played by Charmaine Koh Sher Min) tells the extraordinary story of a little orphan that ends up in the lap of luxury with billionaire Oliver Warbucks (Muhammad Elmyzan Farhan Bin Mohd Fahmi). Unlike most of the other children at Miss Hannigan’s orphanage, the tough Annie believes that her parents are still alive and will one day return to claim her. So when Mr. Warbucks offers to adopt her, she asks the most powerful man in America to help find her real parents instead, and he agrees. Warbucks offers a big reward for Annie’s parents which attracts the attention of con artists Rooster (Abdul Muhaimin), Lily (Jang Eun Sung) and the wicked Miss Hannigan (Nuha Binti Jes Izman). They hatch a plot to kidnap Annie and take the cash reward. This classic family musical has a happy ending for Annie, Daddy Warbucks and the whole gang.

THE TEAM OF ANDREW CHAN, SCOTT MCQUAID, TAN PEIK YI, ANN SALINA PETER, GLORIA PATIE, ABDUL MUHAIMIN, CIK NORASHIKIN AHMAD, WAN ZAKARIA, TAN ENG HENG, TERENCE CHONG, TENGKU DAYANG ADEIRA HAZIRAH and the entire Wedding Singer Company took the Junior Cammies’ Best Ensemble trophy during its debut at the 12th BOH Cameronian Arts Awards 2015 held last 15th of April 2015 at Makespace, Kuala Lumpur.

In 2014, Cempaka Schools chose Matthew Sklar’s Tony Award winning adaptation of the 1998 film ‘The Wedding Singer’, to add to the ongoing yearly tradition of world-class musical productions by the school. Directed by Scott McQuaid, the musical is set in 1985 and is about a love story between a rock star wannabe played by Jes Ismael Izaidin Jes Izman and a young waitress played by Cempaka newcomer Sabrina Chiew Wen Cheen.
