After many tiring games and strong surfs on the grounds of Melbourne Park, the Australian Open 2007 provided drama and action that the year’s opening Grand Slam tournament has been renowned for. While Melbourne’s temperature soared, all players gathered their strongest of wills to play their very best for fourteen whole days. On day twelve, Chinese Taipei pair Yung-Jan Chan and Chia- Jung Chuang failed to win a first Grand Slam title for their country, beaten in three sets in the women's doubles final by Cara Black and Liezel Huber.
At the end of day 13 in Melbourne Park, the woman’s singles Australian Open championship was won by Serena Williams. The delighted champion tore through Maria Sharapova 6-1 and 6-2. Serena Williams rose from the 81st-ranked tennis player in the world to the top echelons of the sport again. Upon claiming her crown, she stated that this year’s win was the highlight of her career. Earlier that day, the Bryan brothers, Max and Bob won the men’s doubles against Jonas Bjorkman and Max Mirnyi.
Moving on from the women’s singles, at the end of day fourteen, Roger Federer triumphed the Australian Open men’s title against Fernando Gonzalez in an outstanding match of scores 6-4 and 6-4. For all of Gonzalez’s heroics, he never stood a chance against the unbeatable Roger Federer. Before the men’s singles, mixed doubles pair Elena Likhovtseva and Daniel Nestor won their final crowning against Belarussian pair Max Mirnyi and Victoria Azarenka.
It was all in a days work for Roger Federer and Serena Williams. They played terrifically in the Grand Slam tournament of 2007, and effectively wrapped it up with outstanding wins. Three cheers for the champions! |
