Breathe Away Anger
By KARYNA YOONG, Standard 6 Aqua

Anger is becoming a growing problem in our lives and, if left unchecked, it can ruin relationships and bring disastrous results to our society. Having the feeling of anger is normal; no one can escape from anger. What is more important is how to deal with it so that it does not land us into serious trouble.

It is common to hear an individual say “I can only take so much in life” before they explode with negative emotions. Many people do not realize that anger actually causes harm to our body as it makes our heart beat faster, increases our blood pressure, harms our mental state and so on. Medically, anger can cause headaches, depression and sleep disorders. Therefore, we have to control our anger. A simple and highly recommended way is the breathing meditation exercise.

How to meditate:

Find a quiet spot free from distractions. It can be indoors or outdoors.
Wear loose clothes, preferably white in colour.
Relax and sit comfortably keeping the back straight and legs in full lotus position (crossed).
Keep your chin up.
Play soft and relaxing music to keep you focused.
Close your eyes and drop your shoulders.
Breathe slowly and deeply from the belly 5 to 6 times.
Think of something to focus on to prevent your mind from wandering. Let your thoughts come and go and free your mind.
Sit still for about 15 to 20 minutes, inhaling and exhaling, and allow your body to relax.
It is best to perform meditation twice a day.
After you feel totally calm and relaxed, gradually open your eyes and start your day with renewed energy.

Tips on anger management:

As you meditate, visualize a relaxing experience or environment from either your memory or imagination. Remind yourself to think positive and calmly.

You can practice meditation daily, but remember to use it in particular during any type of tense situations in which you can feel yourself getting angry. Make your smile cheaper and your anger expensive.
