Julian Chan
By SEAN SOON, Form 4 Science 1

Julian Chan, 6, officially recognized by the Malaysia Book of Records as Malaysia's youngest composer, wrote a book of 10 classical pieces for piano, violin and viola. This book was launched in a ceremony held at Cempaka Cheras campus on 5 September 2007.

Yang Amat Berbahagia Datin Seri Jeanne Abdullah, our First Lady, graciously attended this ceremony despite the fact that Yang Amat Berbahagia Dato Seri Abdullah, our Prime Minister, had to attend another function. The night started with an opening speech by Datin Freida followed by outstanding performances by the prodigy himself, Julian Chan. He performed two of the 10 pieces composed by him since year 2005. Later he performed a duet with one of his fellow orchestra member and ended his performance by playing yet another of his composition with the orchestra.

The evening was further enhanced with groundbreaking performances by the synchronized swimmers followed by a “Black Light Theatre” performance by both students and teachers. Datin Seri Jeanne said that the performances put up by the fellow Cempakans were nothing like she has ever seen before. The evening ended with a performance by the Chinese Drummers and a delicious candlelit poolside dinner. Many parents applauded the Chinese Drummers who surprised everyone with their spectacular performance that was of a high standard, something not often expected of school children.

It ended wonderfully and certainly one evening that we, Cempakans, will always remember with pride. Congratulations, Julian!
