Live Earth: What Now?
By KWAN JI LIAN, Standard 6 Terra

The 7th of July 2007, also known as 7/7/7 – I’m pretty sure most of you readers have read about this concert going on in all 7 continents on the newspapers or on television. Bands and singers coming together for this awesome event, rocking on for the environment; sounds a tad corny, but hey, it’s the biggest concert of the year. And it’s for our planet!

The concerts took place in New York, Johannesburg, Tokyo, Sydney, Rio de Janeiro, Hamburg and Shanghai. Bands and singers like Bon Jovi, Madonna, Linkin Park, Rihanna and Shakira were just a few people who performed during Live Earth.

“Live Earth’s objective is to trigger a global movement to solve the climate crisis. Live Earth marks the beginning of a multi-year campaign led by the Alliance for Climate Protection, The Climate Group and other international organizations to drive individuals, corporations and governments to take action to solve global warming.” -Live Earth website.
Basically, it’s a cool part two of Al Gore’s 'An Inconvenient Truth'.

If some of you regret having spent that Saturday sleeping, going to the mall or doing something other than listening to that awesome concert, don’t worry! Just go on Youtube and search for Live Earth. You’ll be very surprised on how many posts were made on that concert in just a few days; 30500 the last time I checked!

Wondering how you can help with the environment? There are many ways on how we can do so. Firstly, use less plastic bags. Globally, we use as many as 1 million new plastic bags every minute at a cost of 2.2 billion gallons of oil a year. Try reusing old bags whenever or wherever you are. Next, before getting back home from work, shut down your office computer. If just 1 million people did this, we could eliminate up to 45,000 tons of excess carbon dioxide per year.
