The year 2007 witnesses Sri Cempaka taking a giant leap in meeting the demands of a society that holds technology in utmost importance. As Cempaka emerges as the foremost education center in the whole of Asia to realize the One to One Macbook Programme, it is an honour that I find myself a part of the biggest breakthrough for the school since its launch in 1983. This says a lot, considering the school has only managed to grow bigger and better with each passing year.
It is undeniable that the One to One Macbook Programme has been an immense success, and it might only be a tiny bit presumptuous of me to regard it as something barely short of a colossal accomplishment for the school. Not only does it familiarize students with the usage of laptops/computers, it educates students to be computer savvy as well, which proves to be an integral role in a child’s education in this epoch. Furthermore, it serves as a source of relaxation and entertainment for students during their break or lunch periods as many can be found surfing the net, listening to music or even watching movies!
The school requires all students to be able to account for their Macbooks at any given time and place. Perhaps in the beginning, students may have found lugging a bulky laptop around school to be a hassling job, for the Macbooks are quite heavy. However, students quickly came to realize the eminent reason for this stringent rule enforced upon them by the school. The safety of the Macbooks is considered an vital issue, for a Macbook is costly and is the students’ property. Therefore, it remains the responsibility of a student to ensure the safety of his/her Macbook. A fellow Cempakan (who wishes to remain unnamed) declared that he transferred to Sri Cempaka in view of the launching of the One to One Macbook Programme.
The One to One Macbook Programme has further modernized Sri Cempaka and is keeping us adrift in the sea of technological advancements in the world today. Students also have the opportunity to learn the ropes about computer know how by signing up to be class bloggers or student techs. This allows students to further their knowledge about their laptops, and encourages them to discover the application of their knowledge to homework and later life.
I am proud to say that Sri Cempaka is currently the first and only school in Malaysia to use laptops in school–it is proof that impossible is just a state of mind. |
