Commencements Awards Ceremony 2008

Commencements. When honourable awards are presented to the deserving students who have worked excessively hard for them.

The night began with the arrival of parents and invited guests, which was followed by the arrival of the Guest of Honour, Yang Berbahagia Datin Frieda Binti Dato’ Mohd Pilus. After the sumptuous dinner, the awards ceremony began with the arrival of the Book of Excellence, which was carried by the Head Prefect, Aemilia Teoh Su Yin. Prize winners then entered the North Hall after the prefects, carrying candles.

Among the many prestigious academic awards given were the Dato’ Pilus Scholar award for the best Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) results to both Tai Kai Sheng and Tara Thean, the Abdul Majid Scholar award for the best Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) results to Jennifer Kwong Wai May, the Tun Omar Ong Scholar for the best Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) to Samuel Woo, and the Datin Freida Alumna award for Miss Tan Peik Yi. The top students in each form for the year 2007 attained the Silver Awards in recognition of their hard work.

For the co-curricular side, the Cempaka Awards Scheme (CAS) Gold and Platinum awards which are presented to extremely well-rounded Cempakans who excel in curricular and co-curricular activities. Citations were read out, and the winners' lists of accomplishments were nothing short of astounding. The Special Co-curricular Awards for students who had outstanding achievements in a particular co-curricular field were also given, this year's winners being Andrew Woo (Photography and Videography) and Jes Ibrahim (Environmental Activism). Expedition Grand Slam awards were presented to Cempakans who have completed all four levels of expeditions (Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum) and quite a number of students went up onstage to receive their collar pins and certificates with pride.

Congratulations to all the winners! It was a stupendous night filled with an array of brilliant and stunning performances by talented Cempakans and guest performers alike. It being such a stunning display, it deserves a separate article, and hence, please do refer to related article by Grace Cheng for a detailed report.

Overall, it was a memorable night fit for the books. Of excellence, that is.
