So it is that the first major Cempaka event has come and gone. Yes, I am
talking about Swimming Gala. The place was filled up with supporters even before the sun peeked over the hills setting up banners and not to mention the swimmers warming up and trying to calm each other’s nerves. In a way, the atmosphere was rather soothing, seeing as no voice was raised beyond a whisper, the air had a friendly chill to it and the campus was looking almost magical with its lights still lit against the dark blue sky. However, as more people started arriving and the sun started to come out, the calm atmosphere was broken replaced with excitement and cheer.
The highlight of that morning was centred on the possibilities of Harimau snatching away the coveted position of first place again from Beruang, the favourites of so many years past. All swimmers especially those from Harimau were filled with pressure.
The opening ceremony was full of the Cempakan flair, with balloons the colour of each house being released into the air that represented a symbol of equality. Even Cempakan talent did not fail to entertain as seen in the synchronized swimmers who were part of the opening act. Very soon, the first event started and off went the screeching whistle.
The swimmers swung their arms and kicked hard full with house spirit. They had prepared for this moment for months and that was the time when it would all pay off. The events were made up of four main strokes – backstroke, freestyle, butterfly and breaststroke. Many swimmers came out with happy faces.
Parents who had children participating in the gala were standing around the poolside proudly taking pictures of their children. The atmosphere was phenomenal and intense. Fan club members from each house were cheering on for their respective houses.
As Dr Rizal read out the results for each event, there was silence. All ears were focusing on one thing, and one thing only which was to hear the winner for the gala. Harimau were announced the winner for the second year running as they managed to retain the crown followed by Beruang, Seladang and Helang in last place. A hearty ceremony took place where the trophy was handed to the winning team. A warm breeze filled the air for the winner’s team as they held their trophy proudly in the air. |
