What springs to mind when you hear the word ‘Mexico’?
Is it the ubiquitous sombreros, the deliciously spicy food or the charmingly quaint people there?
Last year, from 2 April to 24 August, children whose ages ranged from 7 to 11 years old were invited by the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Institute for Mexicans Abroad, to participate in the 11th Children’s Drawing Contest, “Este es mi Mexico”. The purpose of this contest was to encourage children all over the globe to express what Mexico meant to them, be it its history, culture, scenery or people. This was to be done through drawings. The attractive prizes offered were a laptop, a digital camera or a drawing kit complete with a set of books.
Cempaka Schools entered the competition, with 60 students from the Damansara campus and 102 students from the Cheras campus. It was a pleasant surprise when one of the aforementioned students, Benjamin Lee Wen Xuan, was chosen as one of the fifteen winners for his beautiful drawing.
As such, on Wednesday, 13 February 2008, a prize-giving ceremony was held at the North Hall, Cempaka Cheras campus. It began at 10 o’clock in the morning and was graciously officiated by the Guest of Honour, His Excellency Jorge Alberto Lozoya, the Mexico Ambassador in Malaysia. On this day, the participants received their certificates and, of course, Benjamin Lee Wen Xuan accepted an additional prize.
Congratulations, Benjamin! We at Cempaka Schools are extremely proud of your accomplishment.
