Hysteria
By ERIKA HANA PUTRI, Form 5 Science 3

As Megan sneaked out of her house at exactly 12.36am, she kept turning back, contemplating on joining her girlfriends at the new dance pub, or following her instincts and staying put in her room, grounded by her father. She turned away and continued walking, hastily but silently, trying to find her way around the streets of her neighbourhood.

Megan decided to take a shortcut as she did not want to keep her friends waiting. The nearest shortcut was through an alleyway. Before, she had heard some horrible rumours about that particular alleyway. She knew it to be a dangerous spot with drug-addicts and such, but for some reason, that night she threw all her instincts behind and walked towards the alleyway. Her heart was beating fast and her palms were sweaty, but she didn’t take notice of it. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a shadow. Her heart skipped a beat as she instantly walked faster.

Before she knew it, she was running. Running for her life, as the footsteps behind her become more audible as she ran. She did not dare to look back, but something told her she should. She turned around while running and saw a man in white, looking disheveled and sullen. He had panda eyes and an odd smile on his face, a smile that froze Megan right to her bones. She was so startled and panic-stricken, she fell down, and at the very next second, she felt her predator’s rough hands on her smooth skin.

In her ears, the man purred, “Hi dear, you look awfully pretty tonight”. Megan was close to hyperventilation as the man looked into her eyes. Something about the man’s eyes made Megan feel as if another world was existing around her. She felt dizzy, but alive. At the same time, she also felt scared, yet safe. “What would you do if I told you how special you are?” he asked. Megan felt lost in his eyes and in a split second, she screamed.

Megan was lost in perhaps the highest level of hysteria, crying and rolling on the floor. She could not control her mind, neither could she control the words pouring out of her mouth. She could only see the man in white and nothing else. She was oblivious to the apartment residences looking out the window, staring at her in dismay. Megan was screaming as she witnessed people attacking her predator, as she caught a glimpse of him giving her one last look with his scornful eyes. Megan ran while shouting indecipherable words. She ran down the alleyway into the darkness, with people running after her.

Months later, Megan was never found. Though she was searched for high and low, the closest anyone could find of her was her broken shoe that was found in a secluded corner of the very same alleyway. Some say she was kidnapped and smuggled across the borders of Malaysia to Thailand. Others say she committed suicide. Whatever the story may be, Megan was never found or heard from again.

As for the man in white? He was found guilty of various felony in the past. He is now locked in the state prison. However, security guards have claimed to have heard him chant in a foreign language late at night...
