With the run towards obtaining the First House Cup up and going, Fiona and I, Chooi Ern, had the opportunity to personally speak with the house captains of each house. Every year, the competition towards achieving the glorious House Cup is none other than exciting, competitive and nerve wrecking. We see tears of joy and sadness mixed with sweat, pain and blood. It’s truly a gruelling event. Behind all these fascinating moments, we had managed to talk to the house captains about their preparations and hopes towards the First House Cup.
Rumah Harimau
Male Captain: Harris Tan
YJC: Harris, how does it feel like being the leader of your team so far?
Harris Tan: Actually, it really has been great. Although there are many responsibilities that have to be taken, having the opportunity to experience being a leader is truly overwhelming.
YJC: With Games Carnival just around the corner, what are your expectations for your house?
Harris Tan: Honestly, I don’t have a very high expectation because clearly, the competition this year is really tight! However, as captain, I certainly hope that we’re able to do our best and achieve victory.
YJC: Well, what do you think of the current standings so far? Does it intimidate you at all?
Harris Tan: No, of course not! Everyone worked so hard towards succeeding so I’m pretty satisfied with the current standings so far.
YJC: That’s a good spirit! Are there any specific sports that you’re confident in winning during the Games Carnival?
Harris Tan: Volleyball is a definite win ‘hands down’ for us. As for the rest, it’s a pretty close competition but I’ll do my best and ensure that everyone succeeds at the end of the day.
YJC: Lastly, do you have any inspiring words for your fellow Harimaus out there?
Harris Tan: Well, considering how we’re currently in the lead for Games Carnival… Harimau, let’s maintain this victory and keep up the great work! Go Harimau!
YJC: Alright then. Thank you for your willingness to be interviewed! And good luck to Harimau for the upcoming Games Carnival and Sports Day!
Harris Tan: Thank you.
Female Captain: Sandra Tan
YJC: Sandra, how has it been being Harimau’s lady captain?
Sandra Tan: Well, there’s a lot to do and for me, a lot to juggle but despite of the stress, the outcome has been pretty rewarding thus far.
YJC: Personally, how do you feel about Harimau this year?
Sandra Tan: I think Harimau is pretty strong this year. Not only in terms of winning in the sporting events but the fact that we're very determined and have that house spirit! So, expect a strong fight!
YJC: Do you think that Harimau is capable of obtaining the House Cup?
Sandra Tan: Yes, we definitely have the capabilities to do so and we will do our best.
YJC: Out of curiosity, what are your expectations from your fellow Harimaus out there?
Sandra Tan: Day one has come and gone and we're currently in the lead. We definitely expect to do our best to hold our place there.
YJC: We were just wondering, what is your theme this year and why did you pick it?
Sandra Tan: The theme is Chinatown. We picked it because it is a versatile theme that has elements that can be used for all the events. Most importantly, it reflects RED!
YJC: Would you mind sharing a cheer for your house with us?
Sandra Tan: “Uptight, out of sight, yeah, we're dynamite, go tigers FIGHT FIGHT!”
YJC: Thank you so much for your time, Sandra!
Rumah Seladang
Male Captain: Tan Sien Yi
YJC: What do you think of Seladang so far?
Sien Yi: Seladang has been a pretty great team to work with. This year's competition is going to be tough but our Seladangs have been definitely going all out and we won't let whatever we lack in bog us down.
YJC: After being champions for both Swimming Gala and House Decoration, do you think Seladang is capable of taking home the First House Cup this year?
Sien Yi: (Quote from a chant with the “Bob the Builder” tune.) “OHH SELADANGS YES WE CAN!”
YJC: An interesting and catchy chant! As captain, what are your deepest frustrations with your house?
Sien Yi: When we work and train really hard and spend hours and hours of tiring effort only to lose to luck. But it's all part of the game I guess.
YJC: From what I've noticed, Seladangs maintain their high spirit for their house every year. What do you think of your fellow Seladangs this year?
Sien Yi: (laughs) It's worth mentioning that Seladang gradually dropped from first to a demoralising fourth over the past years and yet, many people tell me about how crazily spirited Seladang is this year! I'd like to say that my fellow housemates are extremely supportive, if you know the right buttons to push. I'd like to make a special note that the Seladang juniors this year are fantastic!
YJC: What is your current goal for Seladang since the Annual Sports Day and Cheerleading Competition are just around the corner?
Sien Yi: Everyone's goal is to win right? But to properly answer your question, we just want to give it our best and most powerful shot to make a big turnaround from Seladang's previous years.
YJC: Are you glad to be chosen as captain for Seladang?
Sien Yi: I'm part glad, part excited, part nervous and part stressed at the same time. They're all in almost equal parts I must say!1
YJC: Do you mind sharing a short cheer or quote for Seladang?
Sien Yi: “No Sweat! Chicken Feet! Ha! Ha! All The Way!”
Female Captain: Andrea Tham
YJC: Andrea, how is Seladang progressing towards obtaining the First House Cup?
Andrea Tham: Well, I think Seladang has been doing quite good so far. Many of them really gave their cooperation and we are all pretty charged up by the fact that we have done much better compared to last year.
YJC: After emerging as champions for both Swimming Gala and House Decoration, do you think Seladang is capable of taking home the First House Cup this year?
Andrea Tham: Of course we are capable! We feel that winning Swimming Gala and House Decoration is just the beginning and a definite great start for us.
YJC: As captain, what are your deepest frustrations with your house?
Andrea Tham: I guess the main thing that frustrates me most is that there are too few players who are actually participating in all sorts of events that we've had so far, especially during the Games Carnival season. It is just about the same people that I see every day participating in majority of the sports. I expected more people to turn up since Games Carnival is quite an event so as captain, I am pretty disappointed with this.
YJC: From what we have noticed, Seladang maintains a very high spirit for their house. What are your personal thoughts about your fellow Seladangs this year?
Andrea Tham: I think that we Seladangs always have high spirits year after year. This year, the seniors are doing exceptionally well in leading the juniors into this. It shows that once we get the right thing going on, there is nothing capable of stopping us. We also have really supportive teachers and I'm really glad about that!
YJC: What is your current goal for Seladang since the Annual Sports Day and Cheerleading competition is just around the corner?
Andrea Tham: Our goal is definitely to come in as champions again. However, the competition really is tough this year. It just seems that the competition is gradually getting higher and higher each year. As for cheerleading, I would say that we are all pretty confident in winning it. Everyone in the team is very committed and they are definitely putting in a lot of effort into the practices they've had. Sports practices have just started but I would say that there are many more Seladangs who are able to take part in this year's Sports Day compared to previous years.
YJC: Are you glad to be chosen as captain for Seladang?
Andrea Tham: Yes, definitely! If I have to do it all over again, I definitely will! I am really glad that I was chosen as captain of Seladang this year.
YJC: Lastly, do you mind sharing a short cheer or a quote for Seladang?
Andrea Tham: “Oh Seladang, CAN WE WIN IT? Oh Seladang, YES WE CAN!”
Rumah Helang
Male Captain: Jared Kok
YJC: So far, what do you think of Helang’s progress towards obtaining the First House Cup?
Jared: In my honest opinion, the only way we can go now is forward, and the startling turn of events in Games Carnival that escalated us from last to tying for second place in the House Cup is very ominous. With the other events coming up, there’s no doubt about it that our chances of victory is relatively high.
YJC: With Helang coming in second for Games Carnival so far, what are your hopes for Rumah Helang next?
Jared: Quite simple and obvious actually, we do the best we can for the other events, maybe just as well.
YJC: Honestly, what do you think of Helang and its capability this year?
Jared: I’m not exaggerating when I say we have a plethora of highly talented, experienced and committed people in our house, most surpassing myself. Sure I can mention names, but that would require a list – a very long list. I think it’s sufficient to say that without those key players and their support, Helang wouldn’t be where we are now, neck-to-neck against Seladang as the runner-up for the House Cup.
YJC: From what we have heard, Helang’s theme this year is Toys. Do you mind sharing with us the reason behind choosing this theme?
Jared: You heard right – the theme is toys, and no, I wouldn’t mind sharing our reasons. We chose that theme because it’s naturally vibrant and colourful. It encompasses a huge and versatile field left open for creativity, thus being limitless in terms of art direction. Dolls, toy soldiers, stuffed animals, puppets, marionettes ... you name it, it’s completely plausible. The idea was also one of the more concise choices we had during our brainstorming sessions. Among the other ideas that were thrown in were Aztec, food, superheroes and the quickly-rejected Power Rangers. To put it succinctly, we favoured the concept of a child’s plaything coming to life.
YJC: Are you satisfied with how Helang is progressing so far in terms of cooperation?
Jared: A very vague question. Well, if it weren’t for the stoic, perseverant attributes of my fellow captains, the house would’ve ceased to function as a cohesive and cooperative group by the storming stage. For that, I am grateful. Morale and house spirit is clearly seen to be on the rise with the March Past practices, and the seniors, who serve as the leader figures here in Helang, are overzealous in ensuring we have a winning chance in the upcoming competitions.
YJC: With Cheerleading and Sports Day just around the corner, what are your hopes and prediction towards these events?
Jared: Hopes and predictions can be two very different things. For example, I speak on behalf of the whole house that we want to win. But we’re up against some tough competition this year, with each house raising their levels higher and higher each day. I also recall you, my interviewer, being proactively involved in the Props Designing Department for your house! For the sake of maintaining the respect of other houses (and my own), I’ll keep my predictions a secret for now.
YJC: Lastly, what are your hopes for your fellow Helangs out there?
Jared: The most important thing in this experience is to learn new skills, new friends, and of course, have fun! Who knows, sometimes you’ll discover a passion for something in the process, and you’ll emerge a better person!
Lady Captain: Laurel Ong
YJC: What do you think of Helang’s progress towards obtaining the First House Cup?
Laurel Ong: We're getting closer and closer in winning the First House Cup. Everyone in Helang is doing exceptionally well for Games Carnival so hopefully we'd do even better for the events to come.
YJC: Honestly, what do you think of Helang and its capability this year?
Laurel Ong: I think that Helang has very determined members and although not many took part in Swimming Gala, there certainly has been a change for Sports Day.
YJC: Are you satisfied with how Helang is progressing so far in terms of cooperation?
Laurel Ong: Although sometimes we may not agree with each other, I am pretty satisfied with the cooperation and teamwork so far.
YJC: What are your hopes for Helang in the upcoming events so far?
Laurel Ong: I am definitely hoping that we win for the upcoming events. However, even if we don’t, I’ll always be proud of everyone for trying their very best.
Rumah Beruang
Male Captain: John Lim
YJC: How's it like being the house captain for Beruang so far?
John: It is an honour to be chosen as the Beruang house captain and I'm proud to lead my house to glory.
YJC: What do you think of Beruang and their chances of winning this year?
John: Each team has a high chance of winning the First House Cup. Beruang just has to work harder to win the First House Cup and I believe we can do it.
YJC: Despite all the hard work you put in, are there any discomforts or frustrations you face when handling your house?
John: Well, there are some students that are more difficult to handle. However, most students are cooperative and contribute to the house.
YJC: So despite coming in third for Games Carnival, do you still think Beruang stands a chance on winning the First House Cup this year?
John: Yes! Of course! Why not? Nothing is impossible!
YJC: Well said! Out of curiosity, what theme is Beruang focusing on this year?
John: The theme this year for Beruang is Fun Fair.
YJC: Of all the available themes out there, why this?
John: Well, Fun Fair is a fun theme! It’s colourful and cheerful, and hopefully it will make the primary students really interested in it (so that they give all their best for the March Past!). We actually thought of the theme Fiesta but found it hard to do a movie and March Past revolving around it. We also wanted Toys but Helang took it first. So we settled for the fun fair theme.
YJC: With Cheerleading and Sports Day just around the corner, what are your hopes for these events?
John: We hope to achieve second place in Cheerleading at the very least and to be victorious in this year's annual Sports Day.
YJC: Last but not least, any words of wisdom for your fellow Beruangs?
John: To all Beruangs out there, even when we're losing, always remember to keep your strong Beruang spirit up and also to always have fun.
Lady Captain: Lee Kit Yen
YJC: How have you been doing as lady captain of Beruang so far?
Lee Kit Yen: It can be stressful at times having to manage a house but I have to say that there are no regrets in taking this responsibility as a lady captain.
YJC: What do you think of Beruang and their chances of winning this year?
Lee Kit Yen: I think that Beruang has a reasonably high chance of winning but the competition is tight so anything really can happen.
YJC: Despite all the hard work you put in, are there any discomforts or frustrations that you face when handling your house?
Lee Kit Yen: There are discomforts and frustrations but I feel that it is okay for that to happen because everyone is only trying to contribute ideas and despite the disagreements every now and then, things would gradually come together and everything would work out fine at the end of the day.
YJC: Despite coming in third for Games Carnival, do you still think Beruang stands a chance on winning the First House Cup?
Lee Kit Yen: Yes, of course! We will always continue to try our best and never give up in winning.
YJC: Out of curiosity, what theme is Beruang focusing on this year?
Lee Kit Yen: Our theme this year is Fun Fair.
YJC: Of all the available themes out there, why this?
Lee Kit Yen: We wanted a theme where we have a vast variety to choose from and that we can relate it with all kinds of things. We didn’t want something that only focuses on our house colour or mascot. Instead, we expanded our range.
YJC: With Cheerleading and Sports Day just around the corner, what are your hopes for these events?
Lee Kit Yen: Cheerleading is a tiring sport. It takes a lot of teamwork and dedication to put together a five-minute performance and honestly, we will be proud with whatever the outcome is. As for Sports day, everyone is doing their part in helping out for march past. The track captains did their best in training the runners to prepare them for their respective events. Thus, I do hope that we’re able to succeed in these events.
YJC: Last but not least, any words of wisdom for your fellow Beruangs?
Lee Kit Yen: I would like my fellow Beruangs to be aware of not getting over-competitive although the run towards the First House Cup may get a little tough. We are always reminded and encouraged to show the sportsmanship within us. Even if we come in last, we should never give up and that we must try our best in everything we do.
Well, a big thank you to all house captains. That was truly an interesting interview. It’s really not as easy as it seems handling a whole team! To all houses out there, everyone’s still in the run for the house cup so good luck and may the best house win. |
