So I won’t hesitate; no more, no more, it is our fate, I’m yours... Sounds familiar? Well, it should be. The talented artiste behind this hit that has invaded our radio stations is none other than Jason Mraz who was in Kuala Lumpur on the 4 March at Stadium Negara.
A full house was expected that Wednesday night as tickets were sold out and it certainly was. The die-hard fans started queuing as early as 11am and by 5pm, the line to enter the stadium was several kilometres. Upon stepping in the dome-shaped stadium, you would find a change in the air. Yes, there was that usual buzz of excitement but it also had a fog of musk with the thousands of fans perspiring at an appalling rate. For the free-standers in The Pit and The Rock Zone, it was a skin-on-skin, sweat-upon-sweat situation and unfortunately, I was one of them.
The concert was scheduled to start at 8pm but as expected of every event in Malaysia, the lights only went off at 8.30pm (which was actually reasonably early for our standards!). The moment Jason Mraz took the stage, the crowd went berserk! With a band consisting of a trombone, trumpet, saxophone, bass, percussion, keyboards and drums, Mraz started off with Make It Mine from his latest album whilst playing the guitar.
Armed with his ukulele and his musical talent, he dazzled the crowd with songs from his previous albums as well such Geek In The Pink, Life Is Wonderful and The Remedy, just to name a few. Mraz was quite an entertainer too in the way he interacted with the crowd. It was his personality, humour and out-of-the-box antics – all in one that had all of us mesmerized. He had set the mood, the “happy feeling” as I call it. Yes, it was hot and sweaty and oh boy, was it disgusting but this 31-year-old had made us forget it all. He didn’t need fancy costumes or any cool special effects; it was just him, his music and the stage. Now, that’s what you call artistry.
Listening to Jason Mraz live was like popping his CD into the stereo but better. The music was superb; his voice as captivating as ever and every word sung was crystal clear. You don’t need to be a genius to know that after hearing him sing the very fast, Dynamo of Volition with such ease. Next up was the much-anticipated I’m Yours which the whole stadium knew by heart, word for word. They swayed from left to right, with their hands in the air and smiles on their faces as they sang along. That was the effect it had.
Jason Mraz had the girls swooning when he returned to the stage in a “I (heart) KL” shirt with the sleeves ripped off, revealing his toned (very toned, I must emphasise) biceps. Now, for the big question of the night, “Who was going to duet with Mr A-Z for Lucky?” That lucky lady was Penny Tai, a Taiwan-based Malaysian artiste who was the biggest disappointment of the night. Not only did she come onto the stage late, was dressed horribly, sang horribly but she forgot the lyrics as well. It was certainly a poor representation of our local music industry. However, this was expected when I found out that Mraz had randomly picked her out of a list and had never met her before. This was evident with the lack of chemistry between the two.
In despite of the letdown from our side, Mraz put on one heck of a good show. It was his stage presence, vocals and quirky nature that made it a highly enjoyable 90 minutes of 14 songs. The insufficient air-conditioning resulted in me almost getting a heatstroke but even so, I left with that “happy feeling”. Although it was only in March, I can easily say that Jason Mraz’s Concert is without a doubt one of the best concerts of 2009. |
