Procrastination
By ALVIN SOO, Form 4 Science 1

Should I write this article? Maybe I’ll do it later. Or not.

Procrastination has always been a good old friend of mine. Yet sometimes (most of the time), it has been a deadly enemy. He attacks when I’m most vulnerable when I’m facing the powerful army of the ‘homework’ kingdom and ‘studying’ city. I try to fight back with my rusty sword of ‘Reason and Rationality’ but the old R and R sword fails me most of the time.

Jokes aside, procrastination has always been a major problem for most people, adults and teenagers alike. You know you have to do something, but you’re just not in the ‘mood’ for it. That’s the basic excuse to put off starting any project or work. As someone I know once said, the more the workload, the lazier you get. This is evidently true in life. (Oh, you know you’ve procrastinated before – don’t try to say you haven’t.)

For example, I nearly always (okay, not always) study last minute before examinations. It’s (almost) inevitable. Sure, I’ve managed to pull it off a couple of times, but the end result of getting, well – bad results after winging it for a couple of days before the exam isn’t the most satisfactory, because I know that if I had studied, I would have done better. Sometimes (usually) for big exams, I studied extra hard and that always paid off. Still somehow, despite the disappointment of bad marks, the lesson doesn’t sink in. I, then, go back to studying the night before (at worst, of course) or the weekend right before the exam week.

Why is it so hard to do work? I’ve seen people just dying to do some work, to keep on moving faster and busier just to chase a goal. Sometimes I admire that, but sometimes it seems pointless to be chasing temporary dreams of success and pride. However, I guess there should be a balance between working hard to achieve important successes and relaxing a bit in life.

So what I’m trying to say is, procrastination is downright bad. It hinders us from being all that we can be, all that we should be. So use that rusty old sword of ‘Reason and Rationality’ and fight it. There’s always some work to be done, and this life’s too short as it is. As I’m typing this, I feel kind of guilty because I have some ‘Sejarah’ homework due this week and I haven’t started. Well, we all have to start somewhere, right? Maybe I’ll start tomorrow...

Just kidding. I’m not sure whether smileys are allowed but here would have been a good smiley with the tongue in cheek.
