Weirdest Day Ever
By Chin Wye Mun of standard 6 Terra

I woke up this morning and was still half-asleep when I brushed my teeth. Then, I took an ice-cold shower which instantly woke me up. I threw on some clothes and went downstairs. I expected to hear the noise of my brothers playing around and the blaring sound of the morning news on the radio which my father would be listening to. I also expected to smell the delicious smell of my mother’s special Saturday breakfast.

To my surprise, the house was silent. I filled my dog’s bowl to the brim with his favourite dog food and called him. I checked his cage but he wasn’t here. All the rooms in my house were empty and my whole family, including my dog, were nowhere to be seen. I wondered where they could have gone. Could they possibly have gone on a vacation without me? Or, could they have been kidnapped? I made myself some breakfast and sat down at the kitchen table. The newspaper was left on the table in an unkempt manner. My mother had definitely read it this morning. I was confused, and all different kinds of thoughts ran through my head about where my family could be.

I tried to call my parents’ cell phones, but none of them answered. I tried and tried to contact them but failed. I sat down at the kitchen table again and tried to recall if they had any plans or if we were supposed to go somewhere but nothing came to my head. I finished my breakfast and cleaned the table. While cleaning the table, I noticed some scraps of paper on it and threw it away. I made my way to the living room and found a trail of my brothers’ toys. The house showed all the signs of my family having been here, but there was no sign or note of any sort telling me where they had gone. I feared that they had been kidnapped. Could they have possibly got into an accident and had to rush to the hospital?

Then, I heard the doorbell rang. Could the kidnappers have come back to kidnap me too? Slowly, I made my way to the front door. I grabbed hold of a baseball bat and I was ready to beat the kidnappers with it. I very slowly opened the door and swung the bat. I heard a loud cry and I started to run. I ran to my room and hid under my bed. My eyes started to water and my eyesight started to blur.

Suddenly, I felt someone gently touch my hand. It was my mother beckoning me to come out from under the bed. I was so glad and I told her that I had injured the kidnapper. My mother burst out into a fit of laughter. I was confused and asked her what was so funny. She told me that I had actually hit my father, who was now suffering from a headache and a bleeding nose. They had actually gone to the nearby animal clinic for a surgery done on my dog’s injured leg and said that they had left a note on the kitchen table. Then I realized that their note was the scrap of paper I had thrown away.

Today was one of the weirdest days ever. I know that I must not let my imagination run wild. I hope I don’t experience another one of these weird days ever again.
