Inception is a 2010 American science fiction film which was written, produced and directed by Christopher Nolan. It is a film centered around Dom Cobb, a skilled thief and the absolute best in the dangerous art of extraction which involves stealing valuable secrets from deep within the subconscious during the dream state. However, he is given a new challenge when he is hired by Japanese businessman, Mr. Saito who wants Cobb to instead plant an idea in his rival’s mind, therefore leading to the title of the movie “Inception”, meaning the creation of something.
In return, Saito will make it possible for Cobb to freely return to the United States and see his children where he is currently wanted by the police. As the intended deception grows ever more complex, Cobb has to deal with his own emotions and feelings of guilt, which are projecting themselves into the dream space. Cobb has to deal with the eventual question of what is real and what is only a dream. Intriguing taglines from the movie include, “The dream is real”, “Your mind is the scene of the crime” and “The most resilient parasite is an idea”. The plot of this movie reached a level of complexity that forced Nolan to work on the script of this film for a whopping nine to ten years.
There are numerous A-list actors who starred in the movie such as Leonardo di Caprio, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Cillian Murphy and Marion Cotillard to name a few. There are a fair amount of movies where the directors hire A-list stars to hide the horrendous script and plot. However, Inception is definitely not among them. In my opinion, the plot is so complex and mind-boggling that I had to watch it three times before I could fully comprehend the plot. There are just so many twists and turns in the plot that when you watch it for the first time, you will be left confused and befuddled. What I enjoyed about the movie is that I could relate to it. After all, we all have dreams. There is a quote in the movie which states “Dreams feel real while we're in them. It's only when we wake up that we realize something was actually strange.”
An interesting point was surfaced in the movie: When we dream, we’re tossed right in the thick of it all. We can never remember how it started; we simply happen to be right there. I love this movie because even though it was based on fiction, it presented the notion that the dream state is far more complex and interesting than we think it is. There was never a dull moment in this plot.
Inception is a movie which requires full concentration from the viewer in order to grasp the complexity of the plot. Even when I was watching it for the third time, I still found it truly exciting and interesting. The plot is so vast and so intricate that it takes a long time before you can wrap your head around it. Inception is an intellectual movie which opens doors to a whole new world, our dream state. I would recommend it to any movie junkies out there. I truly regard it as a masterpiece from Nolan. In my opinion, Inception was one of the best and most mentally intriguing movies of 2010.
