Tap. Tap. Tap. I could hear the echoes of my steps as I ran through the wet dark alley. Every now and then I would land in a puddle of fluid, which I hoped was just water.

I stopped dead in my tracks. I could hear something…someone, growling. I felt bad vibes and looked behind me. Nothing. There was nobody else except me in the alley. I ran faster, trying to make it to the lamp post up ahead. Breathing heavily with my heart thumping hard against my chest and my eyes concentrating on just the lamp post, I reached out for it.

I could hear another echo behind me that was definitely not my footsteps. Someone was behind me. Chasing. Before I could emerge from the darkness, I was dragged back into it by sharp fingernails. Or was it claws? I could hear someone breathing heavily. I could feel the hot breath on my face.

HUMAN HUNTERS AT NIGHT. DO NOT GO OUT WHEN DARK.

Many have been killed by cannibals. Children and women were not spared…

Are we going back to the stone-age times when cannibals exist at a large rate? Are we back pacing instead of going forward? Why do they come out only at night? Studies and investigations are still being done to solve this strange mystery.

I placed the newspapers on my coffee table. Something was wrong with this world. Was this God’s test to train our endurance or to shorten our lifespan? Or maybe they were human doings again. We are definitely killing this world day by day. Maybe some sort of chemical industry went wrong.

I opened the window and there were no sight of living things. Everyone was stuck in their homes, too afraid to come out. Or maybe they were all killed already. What if the cannibals do come out in the day? I decided to take the risk. As I walked out of the door, I could smell blood and corpse in the air. The air was stale. Blood could be seen almost everywhere from the “activities” done in the night.

I felt myself being watched as I walked to the grocery store. But as I looked around I saw no one but my shadow on the road. I walked to the store and later found it locked.

All of a sudden, the sky suddenly turned dark. The sun disappeared along with my shadow. An eclipse? I knew I was in danger. I needed to get back home as fast as possible. I could not see my way clearly. I ended up in a dark alley or so it seems.

Before “it” could tear my skin and eat my flesh, I suddenly felt a burst of outrage. I could feel my eyes enlarging and I could suddenly see in the dark. My teeth grew larger and sharper. I felt my nails growing into sharp claws. I was evolving or…maybe devolving. Into one of them. Without thinking, I suddenly slashed my opponent and licked the blood on my claws. Mmm… I had forgotten how hungry I was.

I pounced on my opponent and began tearing its skin and biting the flesh like an animal. I could not stop what I was doing. I could not even think rationally. I was a cannibal. Or maybe a monster. Heck, I’m still not even sure what we are!

Suddenly the sun started shining brightly again. The eclipse has passed. It lasted only 10 minutes but to me it was the longest 10 minutes I’ve ever experienced. As the sun shone on me, I knelt and stretched out a bloody piece of skin. Oh, looks like we can survive out in the sun after all. I smiled. More “food” to satisfy my soul.
