Why Do We Do What We Do?
By GOH MEI JING, Form 4 Science 1

Today, every little thing that we do matters. No matter how big, how small, how unimportant, how important, and well – you get the picture. You see, with every right move we make comes a victory of sorts. However, we also make many mistakes and wrong choices which could have been or should have been avoided. So, why do we do what we do?

We obviously do what we do because we think we are right.

We also do what we do because of this thing called the ‘halo effect’. Hollywood stars demonstrate the ‘halo effect’ perfectly. They are often attractive and likable. Because of that, we naturally assume they are also intelligent, friendly and so on. Now, of course some of them may definitely be attractive, friendly and intelligent but most of them are not all of those things put together. This is one of the examples of the ‘halo effect’ running rampant in today’s society.

Moving on, the ‘halo effect’ can be seen in our everyday lives. A price tag with a well-known designer’s name on a simple piece of clothing can inflate its price tremendously. We unconsciously succumb to the ‘halo effect’ which these designer names induce. Other people immediately think that these clothes are worth it. Therefore, we tend to also believe that they are worth it. It is as simple as that! We do what we do depending on our evaluation of things, and sometimes our evaluations are based somewhat on others.

So, why do we do what we do? I think we will never really, really truly know why exactly we do what we do. The ‘halo effect’ is just another theory to better understand and justify our actions. It will never be able to fully explain the reason for our choices.

Therefore, next time, when we do feel the urge to buy designer items, we should check whether the ‘halo effect’ is affecting our decision. This simple check can prevent us from wasting our money.
