Hearts To The World
By Khu Chooi Ern, Form 5 Science 2

Save the World is a society introduced in Sri Cempaka in conjunction of raising an awareness on our responsibility towards maintaining and protecting our friendly environment. It is a society that helps in sustaining the natural world through increasing awareness as well as inspiring the people to change for the better. This society encourages us to take initiative independently to improve our environment through different methods such as recycling, reducing, and reusing. Other forms of saving the environment, including reducing electricity usage and water wastage, is encouraged through Save the World. With this, Hearts to the World is an event held at the Cempaka Cheras campus in hopes of capturing the image about the purpose of Save the World along with collecting sufficient funds that will be used towards maintaining and improving our loving nature.

During this very occasion, students from both campuses came together in preparations of Hearts to the World. Various information booths, with some covering facts on diabetes and the effects of smoking shisha, was prepared in the South Hall. A recycling corner was also provided for a large amount of cans to be collected and recycled to acquire a safe and well-maintained environment. Innovative cupcakes that resembled a ‘mini-plant’ along with pizzas sold in recyclable paper bags were promoted among fellow students and guests present that evening. With this, the people present were able to learn bits and pieces about saving our world using creative, innovative and original methods.

Being part of this eye-opening event, I was able to notify myself as an individual to show love and care towards protecting our world. I was able to learn how to make full use of a recyclable bag and use my inner creative and innovative skills to reuse items ranging from bottles to cans. Hearts to the World managed to attract my personal attention in hopes of improving our natural surroundings. Thus, I quote Mr David Orr, ‘When we heal the earth, we heal ourselves’. Likewise, when we include ourselves in the process of saving our world, we are not only able to improve our world, but also our inner self.

After hours spent in the South Hall, guests were cordially invited to enjoy several performances that were lined up for them. We had the winners of the Annual Talentime from both campuses – Andrea Tham, Gabriel Tham and Claudillea Holloway, as well as entertaining performances consisting of vocal and dance which were organized in conjunction of Hearts to the World. The audience were mostly pumped-up and excited with supportive cheers for the fellow performers. Throughout the entire evening, constant applause as well as support were given towards this charitable event.

With that, the UMBRELLA society presidents from the Cempaka Cheras campus were introduced whereby a short talk regarding the awareness that they will be having were shared with the audience. Hearts to the World concluded with a successful amount of funds collected and hopefully, a proper awareness towards the betterment of the environment was raised among the hearts of fellow Cempakans. Chairman, Datin Freida Pilus and Vice Chairman, Dr Iskandar Rizal were invited up on stage for the signing ceremony for Save the World in concluding this well achieved event.

Despite how tired I was at the end of the day, I was glad that the time and effort made to achieve something as memorable as this were very well spent. Hearts to the World was indeed an accomplishment and I look forward to another charitable occasion that would soon be held in the upcoming months!
