Restaurant Review: Number 52
By Kwan Ji Lian, Form 1 Cempaka

I was in my parents’ car for more than 45 minutes. Everywhere I looked, my eyes drifted past miles and miles of open, grassy plains. There were almost no houses, and the homes I saw were the typical village type, constructed out of wood and zinc. There were fruit trees all over the place, and there was no city in sight. The signboards outside told me that I was somewhere in Kajang. I was hungry and wondered why my relatives chose such a distant place to have dinner. After a few minutes, we turned in to a house and got out. It did not look one bit like a restaurant.

This is where we’re eating? I thought.

Soon, I learned that this ‘restaurant’ had no name, and was known only as Number 52. It appeared to be just an ordinary house by the roadside surrounded by empty land. But upon entering, I was greeted by the loud bustling noise of people eating and talking; a typical Chinese restaurant welcome. I sat down with my relatives and soon tucked in the wonderful array of dishes.

Not long after I was seated, a bowl of the fish maw soup with sweet corn, a sweet and savoury soup, was served. To my surprise, it tasted extremely good. In the city, a soup like this would cost at least RM80. Soon, the steamed tilapia came along, cooked to perfection. Then came a fragrant yet rather spicy curry and prawns with noodles in soupy gravy. There was also pork marinated in a sweet Guinness Stout beer sauce, and clay pot chicken. Like the soup, everything was excellent, I even felt terrible when I could not finish eating my third serving of noodles and begged my mom to have the unfinished food packed to take home.

All in all, the food was extremely delicious, and it was definitely worth the trip; five stars all the way.
