"Breakfast
at Tiffany's"
by Truman Capote
Genre: Fiction
Okay, so I admit it's not a brand new novel, conspiracy theories have
emerged that has got tongues wagging. However, it is a classic. I'm
stressing on the word classic here. Some of us may have already watched
the movie starring the ever-elegant Audrey Hepburn and the dashing George
Peppard but I believe that by only reading the book that you will get
to understand the true essence of Breakfast at Tiffany's.
Truman Capote's bestseller is about a young woman who lives in New York
City around the early seventies. It is narrated by her neighbour and
admirer (one of many might I add), a writer named Paul Varjack. Holly
Golightly is portrayed as the young lady that people nowadays would
label as a gold digger but a charming one at that. Armed with good looks,
charm, an expensive taste and a penchant for wealthy but not necessarily
good-looking men, the story focuses on how the narrator sees more than
just a shallow young woman who is after rich guys with a fat wallet.
He sees the sensitive and emotionally fragile side of her. He realizes
that underneath all her charm, Holly simply yearns what other women
yearn for: true love and stability.
Throughout the novel, Holly will charm you with her firm belief that
nothing bad can ever happen too you in Tiffany's and with Valentine's
day just around the corner I'm sure most of us girls agree with her.
Rate: ****
(Ed. Note - On a separate note, there is a now award-winning
movie about the life of the author of this book, Truman Capote, aptly
named 'Capote'. Go watch!)
