An epic adventure of gastronomical
proportions ...
a brief foray into the heart of that which we call the school canteen. Going
where every (and we mean every) Cempakan has gone before.
Su Lin : The lunch bell rings at 1.20 p.m.
sharp, and a general stampede ensues. Students bound out of the classrooms
and thunder down the hallways like bulls at the Pamplona. It is feeding
time. Armed with forks, spoons and insatiable appetites, we march into
the canteen. Where to begin, where to begin...
Hui Juin : Alright! We're here in our very
own Sri Cempaka school canteen. Guess what? We were on a mission to sample the
'tasty delicacies' that our canteen has to offer to the student body. First off,
I decided to try the fried chicken, which i have to say is really very tasty
though it is charged rather expensively. Moving on to the french fries and the
potato wedges, to my disappointment, i found them a little soggy and lacking
just that right pinch of salt.
Su Lin : Whilst Hui Juin was off on her fried food spree,
I wandered off to the far end of the canteen, where Uncle in the White Apron
(UWA) was doing a roaring trade. This is the place to get your sugar
fix as it boasts everything under the sun; chipsmore cookies, kaya puffs, sour
candy, buns, chocolate bars ... you name it, UWA got it. A word of warning though;
the egg tarts should be avoided at all costs.
Hui Juin : Don't forget the butter bun! Filling and oh
so yummy,,,it's a must-have! For the health-conscious and weight-watchers, a
selection of fresh fruits are available too, including mangoes, papayas, guavas
and many more.
Su Lin : Feeling peckish after polishing off my slice
of banana bread and biscuits, I decided to pay a visit to the sandwich counter.
I was faced with three varieties of sarnies : cheese, sardine and chicken. Decisions,
decisions. After some thoughtful deliberation, I closed my eyes and picked randomly
: cheese. Rip. Munch, munch. Hmmm. Not too bad, really. But next time I'll go
for the chicken.
Hui Juin : Next, we decided to check out their
buffet spread. Having stuffed ourselves, we enlisted the help of seasoned gastronomist
and fellow food lover Ong Yen Wei to help us munch and crunch our way though
plates of food. of crispy fish sticks, tofu, chicken wings, sausages, chicken
curry and of course the "much loved" vegetables. Final verdict : two thumbs up!
The chap
fan (mixed rice) counter is definitely one of the hotspots to frequent in
this canteen for its rich variety of dishes. Plus, the food is served steaming
hot, just the way it should be!
Su Lin : With ten minutes to go, we made our final
pit stop at the drinks stand. I bought my customary RM 1 worth of milo ais,
or, as I like to call it, sin in a cup. It's chilled and chock-a-block with enough
sugar to satisfy the sweetest tooth. Forget the Nescafe, people... this baby
is just what you need to wake you up after two gruelling hours of lessons!
Hui Juin : And if that doesn't suit your fancy, they
also stock soft drinks, soya milk, wheatgrass juice, milk, tea, coffee, or just
plain bottled water. Take your pick!
So, we have finally completed our tour of the school canteen. All in all, it's
a pretty nice place to have a meal or simply grab a quick bite. Some of you may
complain about the exorbitant rates, but heck, we think it's a small price to
pay for the quality and the company and face it, where else can you wine and
dine on rainbow-coloured tables?
We give it a rating of four stars. |
